United Soccer Weekend Extravaganza
Friday May 30, 2008
If you have a passion for soccer than you will be looking forward to this upcoming weekend.
It took time, but with less than a week to go before the start of Euro 2008 and with Victoria United proving well in the Pacific Coast Soccer League, Victoria is starting to show some football fever.
Preparations for viewings around the city are beginning to take shape and fans all alike are getting excited for the upcoming event. Everyone who was in Victoria in 2007 can imagine the fan frenzy in Austria and Switzerland as the participating cities become deckled with FIFA sponsorships, banners and ads.
The soccer weekend extravaganza starts Saturday at 9AM with Switzerland vs Czech Republic. Over in Victoria this is only a precursor for the more important matches of the day. That being Victoria United of course.
At 12:30pm Victoria United Alumni take on one of their old arch-rivals the Seattle Hibernians. The Hibs who were members of the PCSL will once again return to Royal Athletic Park to reignite their rivalry with United. The teams last played each other in 2004, and the last time the Hibs one the PCSL championship was in 2001.
The afternoon match has Victoria United's senior men taking on Vancouver Thunderbirds. The T-birds are 3-3-1 this year with 10 points. United will be looking to continue their unbeaten record and maintain pace with current leaders Surrey United.
On Sunday, the squad take on league leaders Surrey United. Surrey are 6-0-0, and have been in fantastic form throughout the year. It will be a battle of the strongest defensive line versus the strongest offensive line. Surrey lead the league in goals scored with 24, whilst Victoria has only allowed 3 goals against all year making them league leaders in that category.
It will be exciting weekend for all soccer fans, and we look forward to seeing you at the park.
