Path to league championship leads away from Island

Wednesday July 9, 2008

Competition is proving few and far between for Victoria United this season.

The boys in white and blue sent both the Seattle Wolves and Okanagan Challenge packing in a pair of high-scoring games last weekend at Royal Athletic Park.

In what was a treat for the many returning fans, Matt Northrup scored twice in a 4-2 win over the Wolves, and it was Pat Gawrys who tallied twice on Saturday in a 5-1 route over Okanagan.

The team now hits the road for five of their next six games in search of a second-straight league title.

With 37 goals through 12 games, the team is on pace for 55, an average of 3.08 per game that would exceedi last year’s total of 50.

Even more impressive is United’s defensive effort of allowing a league leading 10 goals through 12 games. “Our defense itself, we’ve had five shutouts this year,” said Hooker.

A defensemen by trade, Hooker tore his oblique muscle and is likely out for the season, but credits his team’s solid core.

“We can’t take anything for granted, once you do you slip up and end up losing points. Once you start thinking you’re better then the rest of the league is when you start to lose.”

This weekend their in Bellingham to play PSSA Rapids and South Surrey to face Peace Arch. “We can’t look forward to Surrey (United) until we get there,” said Hooker of United’s July 12 clash against first-place Surrey.
