Brian Williams steps down from Victoria United

Monday August 25, 2008

Victoria, August 25, 2008   Long-time Director Brian Williams will be stepping down as a Director and Team Manager for Victoria United, at the club’s upcoming 2008 Annual General Meeting in October.

He is the longest-serving Director of Victoria United, having joined in the 1995 season. During his 14 years, Brian did it all, serving as Secretary, Treasurer, President, Team Manager, and his favourite, official Team Bus Driver. “One thing that was always enjoyable was driving for the road trips,” he said recently, estimating that he drove for more than 400 road games over the years. His unflappable demeanour made him a natural for the role, and the players and fans who accompanied him on these trips had great respect for his dedication and hard work. “I cannot recall Spy ever complaining about things, no matter what happened,” a player commented during the last road trip of the season, billed as BRIAN’s FAREWELL TOUR. “He always got it done, and put up with us to boot. He was the best.”

Brian was recently honoured by the Directors, Volunteers, players and a number of alumni at a reception, and received retirement gifts from the club. Although he steps down as a Director, President Bill McCreadie confirmed that his advice will be sought from time to time, as “… you may retire, Brian, but you will always be part of the family.”

Brian will be devoting his volunteer time to the Gorge Division 1 team as Team Manager, as well as serving as a Director of The Gorge Soccer Association. “I’m going to be doing something next summer that I have never done before,” he confided to Bill Anderson at the reception. “And what would that be?” asked Bill. “Nothing,” he replied, with a wide smile.
