United Win and Tie for Season Home Opener
Monday May 25, 2009
Victoria United's first game of the 2009 Pacific Coast Soccer League season was played at home at a sunny Royal Athletic Park. New head coach Eddie Mukahanana was left with only a few of the last season's players after the expansion of the United Soccer League PDL side Victoria Highanders. But with all the new faces it wasn't long before they opened the scoring through one of the remaining players from the league winning side of 2008, Steve Gateley, on 25 minutes. A long ball from the back found Kellen Holden on the left, and he drove the by-line and cut the ball back to an unmarked Gateley on the 6-year box, he took a touch and put it into Fraser Valley goalkeeper Andrew Kowan's Bottom left corner.
Six minutes later Victoria United doubled their lead through a nice link-up between two United veterans, Matt Northrup and Gateley. A quickly taken long-throw in from Gateley caught the defence flatfooted, as the defender misread his header, missed completely, and it fell for Northrup who chipped it over the keeper on the half-volley from 12 yards out.
In the 59th minute, Fraser Valley Action pulled a goal back through Dan Lowen, but it took another 20 minutes for Victoria United to wrap up the three points. Some direct running down the left hand side from winger Romaie Martin, brought about an opportunity for Mike Moon who collected a one-two pass between himself and Martin on the penalty spot, takes it under control with his first touch, and volleys into the corner.
